I learned a new word yesterday that I still can't believe has escaped me in all my years of speaking the English language. And it's a word that I think will fit in just fine here, so I would like to bring it to your attention in a new thread dedicated to sharing all the interesting and unusual words that can be found in America's mother tongue. My first word, then, is Cisgender
The Queer Dictionary defines it like this: A cisgender person is someone who identifies as the gender/sex they were assigned at birth. For example, your birth certificate says female, and you identify as a female woman. The colloquial use of cisgender suggests that it is the opposite of transgender. If you’re not "trans", then you’re "cis" (abbreviated form of cisgender). This is not entirely true, because there are people who transition (eg. take hormones, identify as a different gender than what they were assigned with at birth, surgeries, etc.) who do not identify as trans or transgender. UsageCisgender is an adjective and is sometimes used as “cisgendered.” Examples:Cisgender folks will never know what it’s like to be trans.Hi, my name is Mary, and I am cisgender. I prefer she/her/hers as pronouns. Link to definition on Queer Dictionary = queerdictionary.tumblr.com/post/9264228131/cisgender-adj
