I have come up with a short and simple questionnaire and searching for members of the LGBT community to assist me in learning more about the ways we tend to mislead others regarding our sexual orientation. You can help by anonymously filling out the questionnaire in a reply to my forum. Every reply will help the accuracy of the findings, and will hopefully shed light on why too often we are afraid to reveal our true selves. Thanks so much!
The Questionnaire
Sex/Gender: Sexual Orientation: Age: Ethnicity:
Have you ever lied about your sexual orientation? Have you ever lied about you sexual orientation in order to feel more accepted or to fit in? Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation to avoid an awkward social situation? Have you ever lied about your sexual orientation because you thought you would be treated or viewed differently? Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation because you felt society would misjudge you? Have you ever lied to a family member about your sexual orientation? Would you be more likely to lie to a family member about your sexual orientation than to a friend? Have you ever lied to a stranger about your sexual orientation? Are you more comfortable revealing your sexual orientation to strangers? Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation in fear of being harmed? How often do you lie about your sexual orientation? How recently have you lied or withheld your sexual orientation? Do you think society has created an environment that makes it difficult for LGBT to feel comfortable revealing their sexual orientation?

Have you ever lied about your sexual orientation? -yes Have you ever lied about you sexual orientation in order to feel more accepted or to fit in? -no, I have lied bc I'm not ready for people to know yet. Once I'm to a point in my life where I can fully support myself financially I will have no reason to lie Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation to avoid an awkward social situation? -yes Have you ever lied about your sexual orientation because you thought you would be treated or viewed differently? -yes, by my parents & the rest of my family Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation because you felt society would misjudge you? -no Have you ever lied to a family member about your sexual orientation? -yes Would you be more likely to lie to a family member about your sexual orientation than to a friend? -yes Have you ever lied to a stranger about your sexual orientation? -no Are you more comfortable revealing your sexual orientation to strangers? -yes Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation in fear of being harmed? -no How often do you lie about your sexual orientation? -I'm never really faced with talking about it so I don't really have to lie bc its not something I really talk about. But I would only lie if I was around my family. So to answer-I guess not very often How recently have you lied or withheld your sexual orientation? -I think the last time I had to deny it was around 6 months ago Do you think society has created an environment that makes it difficult for LGBT to feel comfortable revealing their sexual orientation? -I think that for me personally it's not necessarily society but the area that I live in. It's hard to be comfortable coming out when you live in the bible belt and you know that your entire family of conservative Christians would have a field day & probably disown you

Sex/Gender: Male Sexual Orientation: Gay Age: 35 Ethnicity: White (Second generation Irish) **I think I responded to this incorrectly so it doesn't show up on this thread so I'm copying my responses here** FIRST OFF let me say that I think these questions are AMAZING! I hope you'll keep us all updated as to what your research finds! MUCH needed understanding in this area! 1. Have you ever lied about your sexual orientation? YES 2. Have you ever lied about you sexual orientation in order to feel more accepted or to fit in? YES 3. Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation to avoid an awkward social situation? YES 4. Have you ever lied about your sexual orientation because you thought you would be treated or viewed differently? YES (very recently - never again!) 5. Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation because you felt society would misjudge you? I HAVE (and ultimately found that I'll always be judged by SOMEONE for SOMETHING; so it isn't worth it!) 6. Have you ever lied to a family member about your sexual orientation? NO - I'm blessed to have a family that wouldn't put me in a situation where I felt pressured to reveal something so personal 7. Would you be more likely to lie to a family member about your sexual orientation than to a friend? NEITHER - more likely to be misleading to an acquaintance 8. Have you ever lied to a stranger about your sexual orientation? YES 9. Are you more comfortable revealing your sexual orientation to strangers? DEPENDS - some strangers give off an air of acceptance while others seem very judgemental 10. Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation in fear of being harmed? YES (not in a LONG time though - times, they are a-changin'!) 11. How often do you lie about your sexual orientation? Rarely if ever anymore 12. How recently have you lied or withheld your sexual orientation? Once recently because of the situation - VERY uncomfortable and judgmental situation 13. Do you think society has created an environment that makes it difficult for LGBT to feel comfortable revealing their sexual orientation? Times have changed and society as a whole is much more accepting than when I first came out - however, I do think sometimes the gay community puts a lot of pressure on people thinking of coming out - it's like, "Hey, you are who you are so come out to everyone and join the "gay lifestyle" completely or be labeled by your own community!" LET ME BE CLEAR HERE - I do not think this is the "norm" for the gay community as a whole and am thoroughly unconvinced that anyone would purposely make anyone else feel this way - I will say this though...I was recently involved in a situation where I was characterized as being "anti-gay," which obviously I am NOT and because my views were twisted to give an opinion which wasn't and isn't my own, many (especially in the gay community) were confused by the statements. Because of that, I received COUNTLESS emails, calls, letters etc. which communicated VERY hateful and honestly HURTFUL comments. I LOVE my gay "peeps" and am proud of the MAJORITY of the gay community - but I did come to see that we could ALL be more tolerant, loving, and willing to hear what others have to say...I make it a point in life to NEVER dismiss another person's opinion even when we do not agree - even someone with whom we disagree can offer some valid points! Sex/Gender:Female Sexual Orientation:Lesbian Age:13 Ethnicity:White Have you ever lied about your sexual orientation? Yes, to everyone. I have my mom convinced that I'm boy obsessed. Have you ever lied about you sexual orientation in order to feel more accepted or to fit in? Not to fit in. I don't like fitting in. Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation to avoid an awkward social situation? I still haven't come out completely, so yeah, I guess. Have you ever lied about your sexual orientation because you thought you would be treated or viewed differently? I'm still scared my mom will view me differently. Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation because you felt society would misjudge you? I feel like all of my friends will think I have a crush on them. Have you ever lied to a family member about your sexual orientation? Everyday. None of my family knows yet. Would you be more likely to lie to a family member about your sexual orientation than to a friend? Yes, but I plan on letting everyone know. Have you ever lied to a stranger about your sexual orientation? Not strangers. Most strangers know me as the lesbian girl. Are you more comfortable revealing your sexual orientation to strangers? I'm very comfortable telling my sexuality to strangers. Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation in fear of being harmed? I haven't. I don't know anyone that would try to hurt me. How often do you lie about your sexual orientation? Everyday, sadly. How recently have you lied or withheld your sexual orientation? Just the other day when I THOUGHT I liked a guy, but didn't. I was lying to myself and him. Do you think society has created an environment that makes it difficult for LGBT to feel comfortable revealing their sexual orientation? Honestly, it depends. In the south, where I'm from, it seems to be a bit harder. There's more judgmental people that aren't used to having LGBT around them. Yes.Have you ever lied about you sexual orientation in order to feel more accepted or to fit in? Yes, when I was much younger.Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation to avoid an awkward social situation? Yes.Have you ever lied about your sexual orientation because you thought you would be treated or viewed differently? Yes.Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation because you felt society would misjudge you? Yes.Have you ever lied to a family member about your sexual orientation? Yes.Would you be more likely to lie to a family member about your sexual orientation than to a friend? Yes.Have you ever lied to a stranger about your sexual orientation? No.Are you more comfortable revealing your sexual orientation to strangers? Yes, although it's unlikely they'd ask.Have you ever lied or withheld your sexual orientation in fear of being harmed? Yes. I was a teenager in the 80s How often do you lie about your sexual orientation? More often than I like, usually if I know for a fact that the person asking the question just wanted to use that information to hurt or harm me. How recently have you lied or withheld your sexual orientation? Not so much anymore, people have stopped asking me and just assume that I am gay since I'm pushing 40 and my "best friend" (their exact words) is a guy.Do you think society has created an environment that makes it difficult for LGBT to feel comfortable revealing their sexual orientation? Yes, as a whole. Although most straight people couldn't care less about what we do behind closed doors, they (and therefore the media) forever seem obsessed with the thoughts of homicidal religious extremists and their brainwashed offsprings. It's impossible to go online or turn on the television without stumbling upon some news about some nut job trying to rid the planet of all LGBT people.
