Dear all,
I would like to ask for your recommendation of a book. I'll explain the background below. I will greatly appreciate your help.
My best friend came out a few months ago. She's in a wonderful relationship with a woman she met online and is very happy. Yet, her mother is refusing to accept it. She's extremely stubborn, no matter how many times they have talked, no matter what anybody else tells here, she refuses to open her mind, be happy for her daughter, or even respect her right to choose. She is positive that my friend is throwing her life away, is not normal etc etc.
Until my friend came out, she and my friend were extremely close. The father passed away years ago and since then especially, they have been especially tight. The mother is not very healthy either and since my friend came out her health has been deteriorating further. It's very worrying. It feels like she's trying to make herself sick. She (the mother) refuses to go see a therapist and talk and get some relief and help. As you can understand by now, she is very conservative in many respects. I'm constantly deliberating on what to do. What she keeps saying is that it doesn't matter what other people say - until you walk in a man's shoes, you cannot really understand. That is why I thought that one way to help would be to find her a memoir - a book written by a parent, whose daughter came out and she refused to accept it, where she talks about the difficulties she faced etc etc. Maybe reading about someone who's been there and came from a similar background and way of thinking could reach her.
I tried searching for such a book, but only found books with guidelines on how to be a parent to an LGBT child. She's not in the mindset of accepting the thought that her daughter is LGBT, so such books are irrelevant at this point. Can anyone recommend a book like the one above - to help someone super conservative deal with this change in their life? I am very worried and am searching for ways to help this family be happy, however I can. If you could help me with this, I would be extremely grateful.
Thank you in advance, with all my heart!!!
Rachel
