Jerry Sanders was the mayor of San Diego, California from 2005 to 2012. The Republican mayor had, for the longest time, been an opponent of marriage equality. In 2007, the San Diego city council voted to file what is called an amicus brief on behalf of opponents of California's Proposition 8, which--at that time--effectively killed marriage equality for same-sex couples in that state, as they sought to have Prop 8 overturned. An amicus allows a person or an entity (in this case, the City of San Diego) who may have a deep interest in the outcome of a pending legal case, but who is not involved in the legal action per se, to state such interest to the court as regards the case's outcome. Mayor Sanders, from the beginning, had steadfastly promised to veto the resolution. Then, shortly before the veto was to have taken place, Mayor Sanders gave a press conference to explain to the people of San Diego that he'd had a change of heart and would not veto the resolution, but sign it instead. In the video below, Mayor Sanders explained that some of his staff were gay and that his daughter had recently come out as lesbian to him and his wife. With these facts, and as a father, he said he could not "look any of them in the face and tell them their relationship, their very lives, were any less meaningful than the marriage I share with my wife Rana."
I've seen this video quite a few times, and I still tear up as I watch this man obviously speak from his heart about something that changed his whole world, politically-speaking. You can tell that it's very difficult for the mayor to say the words that he knew needed to be said. Warning: Grab a tissue before you begin to watch the video below.

I'm just going to go ahead and leave this here: Enjoy! ~Matt OK...our Ms. Cyrus needs to keep an eye on you, Matt! She sings the song a little better than you, but--in my humble opinion--you look a LOT better on the wrecking ball than she does! Thanks for sharing that video with us...it surely DID make me smile.

Watch this video, and see if you can keep from crying... I like to call the video: DEEP In The Heart of Texas
This is the text of Donivan's (I hope I spelled his name correctly) note to the couple. They're simple, beautiful words that need to be read again and again: Hello, Friends. I know it doesn't mean much, but I love you all. You have a beautiful family and I pray that one person's judgmental intolerance does not, in any way, put a damper on your hearts or minds. In the words of M.L.K. [Martin Luther King] Jr., "In the end, we remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends". Donivan

This video is for Dolly Parton's new song, "Home" from her most recent album, Blue Smoke (that's album #42 for our Ms. Parton, in case you're keeping track!). I have loved Dolly Parton since I was a kid in the early 1970's (yep..I am that old...luckily, I've never been accused of acting my age...which is currently 51 ), back when she was a regular on the old Porter Waggoner Show. She's been a gay icon for...forever! Dolly has loved the LGBT community for as long as we've loved her, and she has spoken her support for us most recently by advocating for marriage equality for same-sex couples. One of the best things I like about Dolly, though, is how (aside from a nip & tuck here and there and a lifetime supply of gorgeous blond wigs) she appears to be as genuine and as kind a person as you could ever hope to meet, celebrity or not.
This is my new favorite song of Dolly's because I just love the woman (how can you not?) but what person who has ever had to spend even a moment in that god-forsaken closet cannot empathize with some of the words of this song:
"...a place I can go where I can be free, where I can be happy, and just be me: HOME"
Of course, Dolly sings like an angel (in my humble opinion), but this video is also full of cute, awesome scenes and some gorgeous dresses that will undoubtedly make you smile...the way she always has.
Please, give her a listen...

His name is Emmanuel. His gait is unsteady. He is missing his arms below his elbows He and his brother were found by nuns left in a shoe box in a park in Iraq. He doesn't even know his own birth date. Oh yeah, and he can sing like an angel. I found this clip today, whilst wandering through YouTube-land. It's from a 2011 episode of the Australian X-Factor. It would be easy to pull for Emmanuel considering his seemingly less-than-perfect start in life, but it is his true talent that wins this man the praise and admiration of the audience. As a kid, one of the churches I attended was Emmanuel Baptist Church. In Sunday School, I learned that, in Hebrew, "Emmanuel" means "God with us". How so very appropriate, don't you think? This young man and his brother were born in the middle of an active war zone, left by their birth mother in a box, and they were essentially waiting to perish from the war waging around them, or simply from neglect and the elements. There was every chance that these beautiful souls were going to have a very short journey in this world, but-if you believe in such a thing, like I do-God most certainly was with them both, and God knew that these two were NOT done...not even close. A woman from Australia came to Iraq to help them get the medical attention these boys needed. Obviously, God knew just exactly who to send, because this woman would eventually become their mother. These children abandoned by their birth mother for reason(s) they will never know were found by another woman who desperately wanted to be their mom. These boys were not given up, they were wildly wanted, and obviously loved. And, to me, it's not about what they DON'T have, it's about all they've been given, in the transforming power of a mother's love. Sorry to ramble...I almost forgot about the other purpose of this post: to let you hear Emmanuel sing! Appropriately enough, I suppose, Emmanuel chooses to sing John Lennon's classic, "Imagine", and you can tell that he sings it with the one thing he and his brother were most certainly blessed with: a huge heart. This video has been viewed nearly 25 MILLION TIMES! I am known to stroll through YouTube every now and again, and I can't believe that I've never seen it before! Where have I been??? Anyway, grab your hanky, and give a listen...
