My daughter is a freshman in college and she is considering LGBT counseling as a career. She is not LGBT, but has various friends who are. (I consider the possibility that she is conflicted about her sexuality, but, as of today, she has a boyfriend and has never indicated a leaning towards LGBT). Whatever works for her is fine with me.
Would you say that LGBT individuals or parents of LGBT would prefer a counselor who has that life experience, or, that it would not matter as long as they are interacting with a supportive and knowledgeable counselor?
Any other advice about being a LGBT counselor?

in my opinion, having many friends can actually be a huge role in someones life. Many people dont realize that the LGBT also includes Allies, someone who supports it. I believe that weather or not their counselor is more than just an LGBT ally depends on the person themselves. I personally have an easier time talking to someone who has been through it, but i dont have an issue talking with an ally either.

Personally I do not think that she "has" to be LGBT to be a good LGBT Counselor. However, I know from experience that the LGBT Community can connect with someone, and is more likely, and more comfortable going to someone who is LGBT. Someone who has learned life through all of the difficulties. LGBT Individuals are more receiving of advice, and guidance from someone who has lived the difficulties that the individuals are coming to for advice. I hope this makes some sense to you.
Does she need to be LGBT to be a good LGBT Counselor? No. Not at all. However, it would be more beneficial to her if she was. Maybe instead of being solely an LGBT Counselor... maybe she could be a general counselor who also specializes in helping members of the LGBT Community!
Hope this helps some, and let me know if there is ever anything we can do to help! ~Matt

I appreciate the comments. General counseling with LGBT specialty is a good idea.
